Tomatoes reduce the risk of a stroke.

Lycopene is an antioxidant found in tomatoes. Today in America TV read a recent study which reported that men who have more lycopene in their diets are at a lower risk of having a stroke. It was also learned that cooked tomatoes have more of the antioxidant than raw tomatoes. Bear in mind that a cup of ready-to-serve marina sauce has more than 31,000 micrograms of lycopene while the average raw tomato has about 3,165 micrograms.  Other fruits and veggies with the good stuff include watermelon, grapefruit and mango. If the risk of stroke runs in your family, it makes sense to eat more foods made from cooked tomato products like puree, spaghetti sauce and tomato paste.

Researchers have found that taking a lot of Vitamin D does not keep the common cold away – a common misconception. They tested a group of people of which half took a Vitamin D tablet every day and the other half a placebo and learned that both groups caught the common cold. Today in America Terry Bradshaw reviews the best ways to stave off the common virus which irritates us every year: eat healthy every day, get plenty of rest, drink plenty of fluids, exercise, sneeze in to a tissue or your elbow and wash hands regularly. These are pretty simple things to do and most of us do them everyday anyway. We are in lean times and it is always better to find less expensive ways of taking care of each other.

International Left Handers Day

Lefties across the globe had their day yesterday.

Yesterday, August 13th, was International Left Handers Day, a day to celebrate southpaws and left-handedness. Lefties make up a distinct minority in the world, with only about 10% of the world’s population using its left hands for writing, throwing and other skills. Some estimates put the percentage even lower. By and large, products and buildings are designed for right-handed people. The day has been marked annually on August 13th since 1976 as a day to call attention to the fact that lefties have been maligned and forced to adjust to a world made for righties. The day does not cast blame on right-handed people, but ask them to think about the different challenges left-handed people face.

The Today in America TV show, hosted by famous right-handed former pro football quarterback, actor and veteran television personality Terry Bradshaw, celebrates interesting and encouraging stories from all regions of Canada and the United States. Today in America reviews stories and examples of creativity, innovation and advancement across the economy and throughout American culture.

Addiction is not a nice word and is something that anyone with one will tell you it is the most difficult thing to shake. It can be called a habit, a serious craving, a fixation, an obsession and some will say they have a “monkey on their back”. Today in America with Terry Bradshaw digs into addiction, no matter what it is called, and examines how to break the habit.

Breaking addictions can be done but it takes time, patience and support.

Breaking Free

Addiction is defined as the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma. This sounds rather extreme as severe trauma caused by quitting the habit occurs far less than the definition suggests. Nonetheless, breaking free from addiction is difficult. Support from loved ones is as valuable and needed as any replacement for the habit. The dependence on the substance or behavior should be examined and treated. Replacing it with a healthier option often works. No matter which method of treatment is chosen, whether it is self treatment of prescribed, breaking free from addiction can be accomplished with time, patience and plenty of support.

Terry Bradshaw hosts the show in a laid back fashion. He is an NFL Hall of Fame inductee who was the starring quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Today in America TV does not point fingers but opens the mind to new information that is useful. Learn more about the show and its host at todayinamericatv.com.
